desktop but am unable to access the port on the remote
computer. Is there a way i can definve the COM1 on the
local as COM3 on the remote?

Thanks

Yes, COM port redirection will work, but for certain types of
connections only... What are you trying to connect to the COM port?

I am trying to use a smartcard reader. I need it to be
able to use a program on the remote computer. The only
options in the program is to use the reader on COM ports 1-
4, I have to manually set the port. The remote computer
only has 2 COM ports and I would ultimately like to define
the local COM1 as COM3 orCOM4 on the remote computer.

The Smart Card reader should work transparently without need of
redirection (for instance, I can use my local smartcard reader to use
in Remote Desktop sessions running in another RD session to
authenticate (using my reader on my laptop)).

I don't think this is one of the devices that would work in
redirection, though.. It was mainly limited to modems and similar
RAS-type hardware.
