Remote Desktop Client Connection Lost on Win 98

I have successfully configured and used a remote desktop
connection to two Win XP Pro machines using XP clients. I
am using a VPN configuration and AOL to talk to the
machines. I am trying to setup a WIN 98 machine. I install
all the software without any errors. After AOL connects to
the internet I connect to my internal network via the VPN.
I am able to ping the XP host successfully. When I launch
the Remote desktop software, the window appears with the
appropriate IP address and then after a few minutes I get a
error message saying communciations with the host has been
lost try again. I never see the login dialogue box. I know
the problem is in the Win 98, has anyone run into this
problem or has any suggestion. I have tried several times
of uninstalling the software and reloading but with no
different results.

Thanks

Describe what happens when you are trying to connect - white screen,
black screen, or no screen.. Each has different ramifications...

Jeff,

I get the black screen, with the small dialogue bar at
the top of the screen that has the proper IP addres in it.

However sometimes the small dialogue bar appears with the
current background staying intact. Typicaly when I
connect with other machines that work the first thing
that happens is the dialogue bar appears at the top of
the screen and then entire screen changes to a blue color
before the login dialogue box appears. However this in XP
client machines. This machine is a win 98 box.

Thanks for the help. Fritz

The black screen involves incorrect network settings either locally or
somewhere between the two boxes... Try following the suggestions
here (http://dev.remotenetworktechnology.com/ts/blackhole.htm) first..
Then check your network settings to make sure they are consistent with
what they should be (i.e., if you are getting an IP Address of
192.168.x.x, your subnet mask should be 255.255.255.0, etc).
