Hey Guys, I have a PC and a laptop that are on a home
network. The PC is on WINXP PRO and the laptop is on Home
eddition and both have access to the internet... What I
want to be able to do is travel this summer and be able
to connect to my home PC through a remote desktop
connection from my laptop... since my laptop runs XP HOME
i dont need to install the client software. so far I have

1.added a password to my user account on the host PC

2.fowarded ports 80 and 3389 on my router and all
firewalls on both computers.

3. enabled remote users to connect to this comp. checkbox
on host PC.

4. Attempted to add the username I use on my host PC to
the "users that can connect remotly" box...

I dont know what to do next.... can someone help? Thanks
so much

First, I recommend NOT using the web based method. It simply complicates matters, IMHO. Plus many
ISPs block TCP Port 80 (IIS) because running a web server at your home violates the terms of
agreement you made with your ISP...

So, with that said, to test over your local LAN simply call from the laptop using the private LAN IP
of your desktop.

Once you have verified that works you can test from the laptop at a remote site, or use a dialup
connection from the laptop to call the public IP of your router. If your home ISP assigns a public
IP dynamically then you might want to look at using a dynamic naming service to map the IP to a
known fully qualified domain name. In my case I use a FREE service from No-IP.com. The No-IP.com
software runs on one of my XP Pro boxes and on a time schedule basis contacts the No-IP.com servers.
The No-IP.com servers then know what my current public IP (DHCP assigned by my ISP) is and maps that
to a fully qualified domain name. That information is then propagated over the public internet. I
then call the destination PC, from a remote location, using the fully qualified domain name. It
works very well for me using Remote Desktop.

Others, some free and some $$$$...
