Remote Desktop and/or VPN Issues

I work in an office which has four computers, one of which is the server and
one of which is a laptop.

All machines except the server run on Windows XP Professional. The server
is running on Windows Server 2000.

I confused myself immensly trying to set up a VPN between the server and the
laptop (given the non-user friendliness of Windows 2000).

So I decided that I would try to set up a Remote Desktop from the laptop to
one of the desktop computers. Everytime I try I get the following message:

"The client could not connect to the remote computer. Remote
connections might not be enabled or the computer might be too busy to accept
new connections. It is also possible that network problems are preventing
your connection. Please try again later. If the problem continues to occur,
contact your administrator."

The computers are set up with a Netgear router.

I've tried every troubleshooting guide I can find and seem to have followed
every step, yet still no luck. I've tried connecting using both a private IP
and a public IP. I am also not able to set up a VPN between the laptop and
the desktop computer (Error 800).

Can anyone help me?

Have you configured the router to forward port 3389 for remote desktop and 1723 for VPN?

Ok I forwarded the ports and I am still getting the same error messages.

Any other ideas?

Thank you so much for your help!
