Remote Desktop admin

I have run Netmeeting in the past to remotely administer
workstations with GREAT sucess. Our company recently
indicated "Netmeeting" can no longer be used for remote
admin and we MUST use Terminal Services. I am currently
using Netmeeting for management of 13 XP workstations. I
do not believe Terminal Services will work with XP
professional. Could someone please verify if this is
true?

All of the workstations are running XP Pro and I do not
have XP Server running in the environment.

Thanks in advance for any help.

XP Pro allows 1 active session (console or remote desktop) assuming you have
it properly configure, for example, remote desktop is enabled, remote
desktop port (default is 3389) is open if Internet Connection Firewall is
enabled, a good starting point is at
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/remotedesktop/

Hope this help.

Thanks for the reply but I really need to understand if Terminal Services will run on a Windows XP workstation based system. Our dept is being hard nosed about this approach and insist that 'only terminal services' can be used for remote access. They are not flexible in choices. I'd like to know if it's a waste of time to pursue this approach

Thanks

Yes, Windows XP comes standard with Terminal Services (we probably has some
terminology difference :-) ) except XP Home does not allow any remote
desktop (Terminal Services) connection.

I actually have a similar question. I have a workstation here that a prior employee has somehow gotten terminal service to allow us to terminal into. I am unable to get this to happen with any other xp workstation and after investigating do not see any info on the web about turning this feature on. I do not know how this was done but would like to know if it is approved by microsoft and I have somehow missed it or if it was some hack that has caused this to happen.

Tom,

Are the other XP machines you are trying to install Remote Desktop (Terminal
Services) on Professional or Home Edition. Remote Desktop is only available
on XP Professional machines. You can turn it on by doing the following.

First way -
Right click My Computer -> Properties - Remote tab
Click the check box to allows users to connect remotely to the machine.

Hope this helps.

Thx,
Nico

Hi

If you are asking whether or not you can remotely assist someone using Terminal Services then the answer is no. If you connect to an XP machine using Terminal Services (Remote Desktop) it will suspend the session on that PC and blank the users monitor, pretty useless for tech support, but handy if you just want to install software etc (although you cant restart a PC without resorting to the command prompt within Terminal Services) without leaving your desk.

If you want to provide remote assistance then you are stuck with Remote Assistance and Netmeeting.

Sorry dude, your company is going to have to lump it or settle for something like Ultra VNC.
