An icon appeared on my desktop which when clicked causes a
dialogue box to appear. The dialogue box is
labelled "Remote Control Status" and presents the
following information: Version 6.00: Protocol NetBIOS;
Acceleration not loaded; Compression low; as well as my
network name and address. Could someone explain this to
me. Should I be concerned? Should I remove it and how do I
remove it? Is it connected to my move from dial-up to hi-
speed access? Thank you. Richard.

Doesn't sound good to me. If you are not using a firewall with a high speed
connection you are very vulnerable to attack, especially if you also have file
and print sharing enabled. Go to http://scan.sygatetech.com/ to do a quick to
check your basic vulnerability and also a trojan scan. Also run a virus scan on
your computer after updating your virus definitions and the run SpyBot Search
and Destroy to check for other parasites. See links below on additional tips and
what to do if a virus/trojan is discovered.. --- Steve

Richard, you will have provide more information for
someone to help you. Eg. are you on a corp. network? what
version of windows are you using? what have you installed
recently? many possibilities, some corp network install
software silently on systems, if your part of a network
this could have happened, in windows XP, the remote
assistance maybe turned on and is listening for
connections, or you have installed software that provides
remote control over your system - the HP remote assistance
software that comes with printers provides this. Check it
all, you don't want people tapping into your system. good
luck

Thanks for the reply guys. I am running Windows 2000. I am a home user. I have a laptop and desktop setup in a lan configuration connected via a hub which in turn is connected to a modem/router for high speed access. I have Norton Anti-Virus 2004 installed, as well as having just downloaded and run Ad-aware 6 freeware. In the last week I have installed and run Spybot-Search and Destroy, which did a good job. However, I was forced to uninstall Spybot due to a potential conflict with Norton. I also have SpywareBlaster installed. I still have the Remote Control Status problem. It seems to appear only when I use the high-speed connection. Help is greatly appreciated.

I am having this issue as well.

I'm running Windows XP Professional on a workgroup setup.

I have ran Spybot Search & Destroy and have Norton Antivirus Corp Edition running.

I have ran all of these against the issue and no luck.

If anyone has an answer to this issue please let me know.

Thanks,

Chris
