I am trying to properly network my home computers. I have setup all the
computers on a LAN. All computers are recognized whether they are
connected thru the Linksys router by Ethernet cable OR by wireless.

Now, I want to take the Win2000 Professional laptop and use it to remotely
control my WinXP HOME Desktop. PLEASE NOTE THAT I AM USING WINXP HOME ..
NOT PROFESSIONAL. What is the best way to do that? I really do NOT want
to pay again for PCAnywhere. However, I tried PCAnywhere Version 10.5 and I
can't get them to connect?

My objectives are to open only a few ports on the router. I opened ports
5631 and 5632 for PCAnywhere and it still does NOT work.

Is there a way to control the WinXP desktop by using Microsoft Virtual
Private Network?
How about NetMeeting? My understanding is that NetMeeting requires me to
open up thousands of ports for it to try and work --- is that correct?

What other suggestions do people have? I would appreciate some specific
steps to take because I am a newbie.

Your best bet may be either NetMeeting Remote Desktop Sharing (RDS) or VNC.

You can get the VNC software from http://ultravnc.sourceforge.net/ , http://www.realvnc.com or
http://www.tightvnc.com

Note that the VNC data stream is *NOT* encrypted like the RDS data stream is. Over the public
internet that is a potential security risk. Some folks run VNC through VPN or SSH tunnels.

NetMeeting is built-in to XP and 2000 and can *NOT* be upgraded. Look at this KB article for help
with RDS...

You can use Netmeeting remote desktop to control your XP home machine. It will
work fine and you only need to allow ports 1503, 1720 locally, any port remotely
on your firewall. That configuration worked best for me. The firewall must also
have your network in the trusted zone.
