I would like to work from home but accessing files from my work computer
and/or use programs that are only on my work computer. I work for a very
small company that has the usual network connection and cable modem but not
much else. I don't want to spend vast sums of money on software though.

How easy is this to set up?

Obviously I would like to use something like Remote Desktop and just type in
teh IP address, but I suspect it isn't that simple.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Wallace.

You need to get with your computer support people. If they have a router
between you and the cable modem - they will have to configure the router as
well as your machine at work to allow remote desktop connections. Then they
will have to provide you with the external IP (although you might get it
using http://whatismyip.com/ ...)

Another option would be something like TeamViewer, LogMeIn, etc. With those
options - other than getting the stuff installed on the work computer - you
probably wouldn't have to bother the computer support for much of anything.

Depending on your server solution this could be very simple and easy. If
you're company is running SBS 2003 or SBS 2008 everything is already
built into the network, you just need to properly configure the firewall
appliance to pass the proper ports to the server. This would even be
encrypted and everything is free and simple.

If you don't have a SBS server solution then you can use Remote Desktop
to your office computer, and if more than one of you needs this function
then you would configure TCP Port Mapping so that your (most likely)
single Public IP could use alternative ports and remap them to 3389
inside the LAN.....

You really need to discuss this with your IT Support people - any
mistakes and you expose your network to bad people.
