Remote Connection (classic scenario)

Hi everyone, I need your help in a scenario where an XP Home machine
(connected via DSL with a dynamic IP) needs to be made remotely accessible
to be able to work on this machine from another XP Home box in a different
location, connected to the Internet via ADSL as well.

My understanding is that the machine which needs to be controlled remotely
must run XP PRO in order to use XPs built in Remote Desktop features - which
is not the case here. So we can screw that.

Correct me if wrong, but I would currently resort to 3rd party freeware
(UltraVNC...) in order to get the job done. That is, not having an idea
about the realibilty, speed or security of such a connection. I also learned
that a dynamic IP requires external services (i.e. no-ip.org etc) to be made
available without interruption or user intervention.

Could someone please let me know what the best solution would be in this
scenario? This is a favor I do to a daycare center and the city will not
allow any additional costs (ie. for my work, a static ip or an upgrade to xp
professional).

Thanks!!

You've got it...

UltraVNC with a Dynamic DNS and Updater installed on the computer or the
router with the proper ports forwarded (on the router) and/or allowed
through any software firewalls.

DynDNS.com (free dynamic DNS service.)

Truthfully - if you need more detail than that - it may not be something
*you* want to do. ;-)
After all - all the information you need is on the Internet - all you have
to do is look for it.

In the case of UltraVNC - all the information you need is on their web page
for its setup.
http://www.uvnc.com/
They even have a forum for questions:
http://forum.ultravnc.info/
With FAQs!:
http://forum.ultravnc.info/viewforum.php?f=9&sid=9ecf0715ad036233be8b07657651bca1
Where one of them is, "What Can If I do not have a Static IP for my WAN
Connection":
http://forum.ultravnc.info/viewtopic.php?t=7731
Another is, "Port forwarding NAT/router/firewall for any VNC flavor"
http://forum.ultravnc.info/viewtopic.php?t=3859

In the case of whatever hardware router you have (if any) - all the
information you need will be in the manual or on the web page for said
router. (Or above in one of the links..)

In the case of DynDNS - it explains itself and Dynamic DNS fairly well on
their web page:
http://www.dyndns.com/services/dns/dyndns/
(Plus - some of the links above may help you setup the router with this as
well.)

Download and install as a service the UltraVNC client on the Windows XP Home
PC. Open the necessary ports to allow it through whatever software firewall
the Windows XP Home machine is utilizing (If the Windows firewall - so be
it - look in the HELP and SUPPORT of WIndows itself on 'opening ports
through the firewall'...) Open the necessary port as given in the FAQs for
UltraVNC and forward any ports necessary through your router per
instructions for your router and for UltraVNC. Setup the dynamic DNS on the
router (or if you have none - download the update client from DynDNS and
install it on your computer.)

Now you are ready to go. You have a nice name (whatever.dyndns.org or
another) and you can bring the viewer for UltraVNC with you anywhere. You
run the viewer, put in the nice name and connect to the Windows XP Home
Machine from anywhere you have a network connection (given you've setup
everything correctly and the machine is up/connected to the Internet.)

thank you Shenan, your response was very helpful. the situation is that i
try to help out my mother-in-law - her employer can not afford to hire
someone to implement this. Anyway, i will set up a decent connection with
your help. Cheers.
