Hello,
Please help. It's been a couple of weeks now, I'm new to Win2000, and I have looked everywhere and can't solve this problem.
If this is the incorrect forum for this post, please advise.
- Setup -
server: DC Windows 2000 (SP4 - fully patched), LAN IP Address: 192.168.1.10, Remote Access Server IP address: 192.168.1.20
remote client: Windows XP Professional using PPP dial-up, IP address: 192.168.1.21
modems: ext. Zoom 56K DualMode 2949 (Rockwell chipset) at each end (server and remote client)
LAN: contains a DC, a member server, and one Win9x workstation all on the same subnet.
authentication: MS-CHAP v2 and MS-CHAP, "optional encryption"
- Problem -
When dialing direct into the server, I am able to connect, but I can't access resources or join the domain (this post uses "example.com" in place of the real domain).
Once connected, attempting to navigate through "My Network Places" in Windows Explorer, I can descend the hierarchy to "Entire Network | Microsoft Windows Network | example", but when I click "example", after roughly 10 seconds, I get the following error:
"example is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource... The network path was not found."
If I go to "My Computer", select "Computer Name", then "Change", then select "Member of" "Domain" radio button, type "example.com", I am prompted for username/pw, I tried both regular user and admin, after roughly 20 seconds, I get the following error for either user:
"The following error occurred attempting to join domain "example.com": The network path was not found."
- Troubleshooting Notes -
The Win9x LAN workstation can successfully login and access network resources, so this appears to be a remote access problem.
During dial-up, I have tried connecting to the server using both a regular user account (dial-in "access allowed" configured) and the admin account with the same results.
Once connected, I can successfully ping the DC using either the IP address or "dc.example.com" from the remote client.
"TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper" is running on remote client.
File and Printer Sharing is enabled on server LAN interface. I don't know how or if I can enable it for the remote access server interface.
In the Dial-Up Properties, I tried both 192.168.1.10 and 192.168.1.20 for Preferred DNS server (same results).
In the Dial-Up Properties, I also specified the WINS server address (same as DNS, or 192.168.1.10 - same results).
Sincere thanks,
- Scott
