How are you trying to establish remote assistance?
Across what equipment (routers, firewalls, NATs, etc..)?
What version and patch level of Windows XP on both ends?

I did not ask for vast info about remote assistance. I asked a simple question, and please give
me a simple answer!

We set everything up as it should be set up. I received a file from the remote computer. I
double clicked on it, and the remote assistance box came up. Entered the password of the remote
computer. Received the above error message.

All that I am asking is how to resolve the remote host name.

Thanks.

You have not given enough information to resolve your problem.

You answered none of the questions I asked.
They are simple questions.
Please give us a simple answer for each of them!

Your answer (more than likely) already lies in one of the links I gave you -
but with the lack of information you provided - I cannot be more specific.

- Are you trying to connect across any routers/NAT devices?
- What firewalls are you utilizing (if any) and are they properly configured
on each machine?
- What version and patch level of Windows XP is each end of the remote
connection?

To me it sounds like you are behind a router/NAT device (the remote machine
is) and you are not connecting to their public IP and/or the proper ports on
the router/NAT device are ot being forwarded to the machine you are trying
to reach. All of which is addressed in the links given above.

Remember - you are the only one that can see the situation of all the
machines in question when you post something on the newsgroups - so either
we *guess* at what's connected/in place/what you have tried/done/know or you
tell us or you don't get an answer because no one wants to guess at what you
have. *grin*

You walk into a mechanic shop and say..

'I get a "Check Engine" light that comes on whenever I drive. I have a
Ford.'

And see if they don't ask for more details - particularly when you tell them
that you cannot bring the car to them. *smile*

I have a Linksys router. Windows Firewall. I did not see the solution in any of the links above.

ETrust CA Pest Patrol. Panda anti-virus.

What do you suggest?

Win XP, latest patch. I am trying to connect to a laptop at a remote site, which also has XP. I
believe latest patches.

Thanks.

You ask for assistance, and then get all snotty when someone asks for more
information ?? Take your question to a repair shop and pay someone for the
answer then.

-------------
I have Windows XP Home Edition with SP2 and all patches up until today (I
went to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ today and scanned.) My friend
has Windows XP Professional Edition with SP2 (I do not know beyond that) and
lives in the same city - but not in the same location.

We both have high-speed internet (I have cable modem, they have DSL) and we
both have DSL/Cable Modem routers that give us a private IP address
(192.168.x.x) and allow us to connect more than one computer to our
high-speed internet connection. I have a Netgear WGR614v4 router and my
friend has a Westel DSL modem with a built-in router and a wireless access
point connected to that.

We both just use the built-in Windows XP Firewall and we have verified that
"Remote Desktop" is an exception that is activated.

My friend is sending me an invitaion via email to connect to their computer
using remote assistance. Whenever the invitation is ran, I get a request
for the password - but then I receive this error, "Remote assistance could
not be established because the remote host name could not be resolved."

Why can I not connect to my friends computer? What can I do to resolve this
error message.

In the case where you are trying to connect to the other computer - your
setup doesn't matter as much as the remote systems' setup. Assuming (since
you say "remote site") this laptop is not on the same physical network as
you are.... can you answer these questions for the remote system?

- Where this "laptop" is located - is it also behind a router?
- Is that router/NAT device configured to forward the proper port? (3389)
(to the machine in question.)
- Is that machine's firewall (software and any hardware firewall..)
configured to allow remote assistance through it?

This web page may help you, or whom ever may be using the laptop - check
their settings and setup to confirm they have everything configured on their
end.

Don't know. (if it is configured to forward the proper ports...)
It is a Belkin router. I asked my client to call Belkin
to see what can be done.

Software disabled. Not sure about hardware. (firewalls configured?)

I'll check it out. (the web page given in the last response..)

You may want to point your client here - where they can get the manuals for
said router..
http://www.belkin.com/support/download.asp?category=9&lang=1&mode

I would also recommend that the client turn on their software firewall
(Windows XP Firewall at least) - as although NAT devices (home routers) such
as the one they have may help - but the software router is another easy
layer of protection to put in place. By default - Remote Assistance is
configured (allowed as an exception) through the Windows XP Firewall.

Another option may be as simple as the client enabling UPnP on their
router.. Although the port forwarding is just as easy.

There is NO simple answer if we can not see the two computers physically
involved, how they are connected, what 3rd party software is installed that
may be causing conflicts, how they are configured etc.

A computer technician may be able to give you a simple answer if you bring
BOTH computers to him, along with the routers and modems for each computer.

He will also charge you a simple price of a couple of hundred dollars to set
them up for remote assistance. Heck, I could do it for you for the same
simple price (you pay shipping both ways).

If the computers (BOTH computers) are not configured correctly, do not have
the correct hardware and settings and have been tinkered with, remote
assistance will not work.

Now, get off your high horse and don't be so snotty to the people whom you
would like to help you.

I resent being called names and saying that I am on a high horse. I asked to
narrow down the stuff you were giving me, and to be more precise. This is the
only way we can solve the problem. Throwing vast amount of stuff at me is
useless.

We are looking to other approaches which give support. You have given me nothing
of value at all!

Hello Sanford
Sorry to push in - but I was wondering why this remote assistance was
needed? What is it?

I wrote a software program. My client has problems. His computer is connected
to the Internet, but cannot send email. He cannot send me the error log
files. I need this remote assistance in order to read the log files.

Is there another way to upload files, other than email?

Yes - with one heck of a long piece of wire from one computer to the other.
But I have emails received at home re-directed to work.
Could that not solve your problem.
You would have to ask someone how its done. IT at work did it for me.
But don't forget to ask nicely this time.

So couldn't you have found a nicer way to put it?

Why exactly should anyone here give you anything of value? Have you
given anything?
You know you are an extremely rude individual. The people who answer
here do it all for free. You asked a question and were given an answer
and then have the nerve to........ ahh, forget it.

Shenan, congratulations on your patience and thankyou for the time you
put in here.
