Hi gang,

environment is:

My brother in Florida has a wireless network
I have a wireless network in Indiana

While in Florida visiting, i installed MSN messenger 7.5 on my brothers
computer and mine, and used "remote assistance" without problems at his
house.

After returning to Indiana, I installed MSN messenger 7.5 on my wife's
computer and can use it in the house without problems on out two machines.

*** PROBLEM ****
When I attempt to start remote assistance over the internet to my brother.
- he requests remote assistance
- I accept
- it says it is starting, and then:
- "Remote Assistance connection disconnected, Please try again" and
we can't connect.

Thanks for any help.

Additional information:

I have installed msn messenger 7.5 on a couple other machines in this area,
and have the exact same results .

it is clear that if I am behind the router, it works, but if I want to go
thru the internet via the router on either end, it will not work.

OK, I now have over 15 hours invested in trying the MSN messenger 7.5
approach, so I tried the www.logmein.com site and downloaded their free
version.

It ran, right off the bat, and I tested it on my wife's computer, no
problem. I still have to get it installed on a couple of computers so that I
prove to myself that I can access them thru my/their routers over the
internet. I'll keep you posted.

Go to Start/Run. "Type in services.msc" without the quotes. Look for "SSDP
Discovery Services" and "Universal Plug and Play Device Host". Make sure the
Status for both of these services is "Started" and the Startup Type is set to
"Automatic" on both systems. Also have your brother enable UPnP on his
router if it is not. Restart your systems then try a Remote Assistance
session.

Thanks for this post Darrell. I was having the exact same issues as ejhines
and your services.msc post resolved it. Thanks!!!
