The error message you get when Remote Assistance doesn't work is just a generic error; it
doesn't really say a whole lot or what happened.
Most likely what's happening is your contact is using a router or other similar network
device or software firewall which is blocking the Remote Assistance connection. In the
router scenario, the person requesting assistance must have a router which supports Universal
Plug and Play (UPnP) and has the feature engaged.
Since this can be a slightly advanced, you may want to just use something else. For
instance, Copilot is free at certain times:

And Microsoft SharedView (free also) allows you to share your entire desktop with up-to 15
people at once, however it is a full-featured product and can be a bit confusing at first:
