Remote assistance failed please try later,,,, ,Is the message that comes up
on my screen when somebody sends an invite and wants assistance from me.
through msn messenger .

The strange thing is other pc.s can view my screen if i send them an
invitation ,But i can not for some reason view theire screens as the
assistance seems to work only one way.
I have tried with the firewall off ,With anti virus off , all remote
assistance boxes are checked .Windows messenger is also enabled.
Have checked the services list with a pc that is working correctly with
remote assistance.
Anybody any ideas on this . ------ win xp home . 3 pc.s in house 2 work
correctly .--------
You have accepted the invitation to start Remote Assistance , Remote
assistance loading ,---Then the killer message--- Remote assistance failed
please try later .

jonny:
I fought this for weeks, at first I thought it was a software issue with
Windows OneCare Live, it took me quite some time that my problem was
attributed to my Westell 6100 dsl device. Don't know if you are using one,
just thought I would pass it along in case it might help

When I used this it was my firewall which was stopping it (Norton). Try
turning that off as mine worked perfectly after.

what did you do to correct the problem with the westell 6100 dsl modem. I
have the same modem and am currently having issues with remote access. Thanks

Darlynn

I too am looking for an answer to this issue, I can not access my dads
computer remotely with xp sp2 using windows messenger. I have tried port
forwarding on the westell device using 3389 for tcp and udp. ??
any help /

Darlynn:
You have to set the router (6100) to bridge mode. I have attached the
two links that I used. Just remember that if you have set any advanced
setting that is to say port forwarding and or dmz stuff set it back before
you go through these steps. Also remember that if you have Verizon DSL then
be prepared to wait upto two (2) hours for you dhcp to renew on your dsl
router I'm assuming you are using another dsl router that is more easily
configured, like a D-Link, or Linksys or Netgear...I would not bridge your
6100 and then hook it directly to your PC because then your PC gets a live
internet address when your DHCP is finally able to renew any way just follow
these two links, there is a step by step and even one with pictures of the
6100 setup screens.

and don't panic it really does take upto two hours..and the release renew
doesn.t work on the 6100. You can always set everything back to factory
setting with the reset switch on the back.
Hope this helps

I too have this problem. Let me share the tests I did to isolate the
problem.
As a start let me say that this problem did not exist about a year ago.
I tested the remote assistance with 3 different computers with all possible
combninations. Only one of the 3 showed this problem.
All 3 computers are behind a router with firewall 2 on the same network
and the other at a different location. So we can eliminate the
router or the firewall as the source of the problem. All 3 computers have
Windows XP SP2 installed with an antivirus I disabled them with no change.
Now for the bits and pieces:
Then I looked at the running tasks in different situation. It showed me that
helpctr.exe and wmiprvse.exe are the 2 involved in remote assistance using
Windows Messenger. wmiprvse.exe seems to be the source of the problem.
Now I have to figure out what is really happening.
I will post back here any findings.
