My mom is trying to get me to do Remote Assistance for her computer. She
sends me the invitation via MSN Messenger and I receive and accept, but
nothing happens. Any ideas as to what we are doing wrong?

what's the error message?

i receive error message that host name cannot be resolved when trying to
connect to my brothers computer

I don't beleive you even get an error message, and if I am right, I am also
just getting this issue on a DELL laptop running XP Pro SP2...I have not yet
indentified the fix, however I will respond back as soon as I do :)

Assuming the port 3389 has been opened, you may need to modify the IP address. This search result may help.

remote desktop How to fix the error "Remote Assistance connection could not be established because the remote host name could not be resolved"? ....

What firewall program are you using? Make sure Port 3389 is opened. If you
are using Windows XP default firewall then it automatically opens port 3389
for you.
What type of internet connection? Your ISP might be able to help you open
port 3389
