Remote assistance, corrupted keyboard

Running on XP Home. Taking control computer has some keys corrupted.
Controlled computer OK. For example k=2. System restore is only solution.

Any ideas?

Laptop? Turn off NumLock.
You'll notice that on small/laptop keyboards - NumLock turns a set of the
alphabetic keys into numbers.
 
Yes, blindingly obvious solution now you have mentioned it. Why didn't I
think of that! Sorry for asking the question.
But, having asked it, why is it happening?

The laptop I'm using to conrol the deskop computer, is beng switched into
<<NUM Lock>>, presumably since the controlled computer has <<NUM Lock>> set.

This still leaves the issue of, why is the sysem not keeping track correctly
of which keyboard mode (in this case <<NUM Lock>> status), is applicable to
which window / computer that has the focus at the time? It is obviously
something I can live with, but is it strictly a fault, or is it working as
intended?

Are there any other settings that could be /are affected in a simiar manner?
If there are, is it limited to keyboard or can other aspects of the system
state be affected?
