I am leaving on a trip and want to connect to my home machine from a friend's
house. We both have WinXP Home. Can someone walk me through the steps to
get connected from her computer to mine? I am home now so I can set my
computer to co-operate before I leave.

I have a cable connection that is always on but the screen saver will come
on after a certain period of non-use. I sign on to my computer as the
administrator.

If successful, what should I expect to see on the screen of the other
computer as I connect to mine? This will be my first attempt at this type of
connection so I need details please.

Thanks,

Lee

Hi - XP Home doesn't have Remote Desktop, so you'll need another option -
pcAnywhere, VNC, whatnot.

Hum, I was under the impression I could do this. What about remote
assistance?
Does someone have to be at each computer for that to function?

I know I could probably *try* PcAnywhere but I'm not sure if my friend wants
me installing stuff to her computer. Any simple way to accomplish the
connection or should I just give up on the idea?

Thanks,

Lee

Yes, someone has to be at the Remote computer to accept the Remote Assistance request. As Lanwench stated, XP Home does not support Remote Desktop as a "host", although an XP Home machine can access a host as a "guest".

You can either use PC Anywhere (not free), WinVNC (free) or you can use GoToMyPC (www.gotomypc.com).

Go To My PC has a free trial of 60 minutes or 30 days, whichever comes first. Also, in some markets, they're advertising on the radio for a free 45 day trial, but its still limited to 60 minutes. With this service, you can access your home PC from any computer with internet access.
