I have a win2000 small business server at work and need to
set up my win2000 laptop to be able to access it to
monitor event logs, check backups, etc. when I'm out of
the office. From home I have cable and on the road would
use dial up. I've never done this before and don't know
where to start. If anyone could point me in the right
direction, I would really appreciate it.

Use PCAnywhere or VNC.

If it were a 2003 Server you could have used Remote Desktop.

See the link below to enabling Remote Administration with Terminal Services
which also requires installing the TS client on your laptop to access your
server as explained..

You would have to configure your firewall to allow and port forward [if
using NAT] inbound port 3389 TCP which terminal services uses. Terminal
Services will be encrypted, but it is better to go through a VPN tunnel if
at all possible. You would have to enter the "public" IP address of your
work internet connection as assigned by your ISP provider in the TS client
connectoid to gain access, and hopefully that address is static so that it
does not change - your ISP can advice you on that.

Note that allowing access to your network through ANY remote access product
is a backdoor to your network and you MUST use complex password for the
account you logon with as that account will have administrator access to
your domain. Don't hesitate to use a complex password for your remote
account and then write it down but keep it safe and away from your laptop. I
would also disable the ability for the built in administrator account to
logon through Terminal Services in it's account properties as it WILL be a
target of attack when hackers discover that you have port 3389 open. ---
