Can somebody please give me some guidance. We have setup
a small network in our office and want the abilty to
connect remotely. The server is Windows 2000 and the
workstation are all running XP Pro. We have high speed
internet at the office and two of the remote users have
high speed internet. What would be the easiest most cost
effective way to connect the home users. I have talked to
half a dozen people and can't get a straight answer out of
anybody unless I give them a credit card number. Some say
I need a router, some say I need VPN, and some say
PCAnywhere would work. My knowledge in this area is very
limited and I don't want to spend a lot of money on
something I can't use. I need the the high speed internet
users and dial up users to be able to access our server
securely. Thanks for any help.

I tried setting up a VPN and I must have done something
wrong because not only could I not connect remotely, but
the users in the office no longer had internet access. I
forget what the error message was, but I will try it again
and see what happens. Thanks.

Here is the solution for your problem.
You can only have one default route
have the default route in the external interface
pointing to internet router /firewall
have static routes for the internal network. ( no default
gateway)

Have a dedicated server for Remote access.
Configure routing and remote access. Make the machine
part of active directory domain.
create the appropriate policy to allow users.
Allow remote dialin permissions for the groups that
you use in policy.
The users in the office can have their PCs connected
and when they get home they can dial in to the vpn
and they would terminal service into their XP boxes.
Easy for security as you would allow only one IP/TCP
for each user
Hope that helps
