I have XP pro and I need remote access to my home computer using a dial-up connection. I also have my fax modem set up on this computer to answer after 3 rings. Will these work together?

You mean at the same time? No.

If you are connected by dial-up and access your computer then the phone line
will be tied up. When you disconnect, assuming the computer is still
booted, then it can receive incoming faxes.

No, not at the same time. When there an incoming calls how does windows know its an incoming fax as opposed to someone dialing into the computer? I need to set up a password if I'm going to be dialing in to the computer. I don't want it to prompt for a password if someone is just sending me a fax.

If someone is just sending you a fax, passwords don't enter into it. Their
fax modem talks to your fax modem. You do need to be set to receive but the
fax modem on the receiving end, hears the fax modem on the sending side and
they handle the rest. If you're dialing into the computer, your fax
software shouldn't intervene as it won't get a signal from an outside fax
modem at that time.
