I have occasionally helped a friend by using Remote Assistance. He now
has a new computer with Vista. Will I still be able to access his
computer from mine? I don't know which version of Vista he has.

Thanks.

Hi,

Won't matter which version of Vista he gets. You won't be able to use Remote
Assistance for him until you also have a Vista box. You can do the reverse,
ie: provide Remote Assistance from a Vista box to an XP one, but not the
other way around.

Depending on the version he gets, you may be able to use Remote Desktop
(Ultimate or Business support this), otherwise you can look into third party
VPN software to continue assisting him.

Use Team Viewer. It's free for personal use and much, much easier for the
non-techie people whom you're trying to support. On your end, you'll
install the full support module. On your friend's end, he'll download the
"instant customer support" module, which doesn't need to be installed. Have
him download it to somewhere he'll find it. Then when he wants help all he
will have to do is call you and double-click on TeamViewerQS.exe.

VPN software? Not sure how that is going to help. However, OpenVPN allows
me to Remote Desktop into any computer on my LAN (from the internet) without
having to have the RDP port forwarded after having it changed from 3389 to a
unique one.

Thanks for the input. I went to the TeamViewer website and downloaded
it. Looks interesting and possibly helpful.
