Hi

I have installed a portable computer on our internal network with Outlook
2000 with and OST file attached.
When I syncronise on the internal network, everything works fine.

Furthermore, I have installed Microsoft PPTP /VPN on the computer, whitch I
use at home via an 512 Mbit ADSL.

My problem is; sometimes Outlook cant reach Exchange on our Small Business
Server 2000, sometimes it can. Sometimes it helps rebooting the server, so
maybe the problem is on the server.

Do you have any suggestions on how to solve this problem. Maybe a link to
how I set up an portabel computer with Outlook 2000 and VPN.

Thanks in advance.

Can you ping the Exchange server by name from your computer when connected
via VPN? Do you have a hosts or lmhosts file locally to resolve the name to
the correct private IP address of the Exchange server? Are you connecting
via VPN and then opening Outlook, or are you asking Outlook to dial for you?

I can ping the Exchange server by name and IP.
I dont use host or lmhost file.
First I connect via VPN, then I open Outlook. Outlook uses already
established network connection.

Are you using WINS? Not sure how the name resolution is being handled
otherwise - most VPN connections don't pass broadcast/NetBIOS traffic....

Yes, we use WINS. Our Client uses XP and Microsoft PPTP over VPN.

OK, then you don't need the hosts/lmhosts, if you have the WINS server
address in the network properties on the remote machine.

I personally recommend that you set up Outlook to work offline by default,
with scheduled background syncs - tends to improve performance.
