Remote Access Setup

2 questions, 1 regarding network access and one for home access:

I am trying to setup Remote Access to connect to a home computer behind a
Linksys Router. I have setup port forwarding (port 3389), made sure the
other end had Remote Assistance turned on. Do I have to have them setup a
static IP address on the machine I want to access or will the current
address assigned by DHCP work for each session. I hate Messenger, so I
would prefer to set it up using email or file. What am I missing to make
this connection?

2nd question - If I want to access several computers in a domain (using
simple router setup), can I setup port forwarding to each IP address for
each local machine to access and offer assistance or is there something else
I have to do to make it work in a domain (2000 server) environment?

MS offers minimal info in their knowledgebase and MSDN, so I am basically
stuck at this point.

Thanks!!

Reserve an IP address for your pc on the linksys, if it lets you do that,
and leave network settings to automatic on your pc. The router should then
give you the same IP address each time you turn on. If you're running a
firewall then configure it to allow traffic.
Is remote desktop not working for you? What "symptoms" are you experiencing?

You'll need to change the default listening port on each machine, then set
up port forwarding for each of these ports on the router. When you attempt
to access each pc, you'll also need to use the port in the machine address
when you connect from the client. See articles below

On the local connection, symptom is it just says can't connect to end-user,
unable to find connection. I forwarded port 3389 to the computer IP address
(ipconfig to check) and have the computer to autodetect settings (there is
only 1 computer on that end, so it gets 192.168.1.100 every time).

I'll investigate the corporate connections. If I change the port listening
on each computer and setup the forwarding on the router, how do I include
the port number on the connection?

Thanks!!

Hi again Karl,

I think you'd probably use something like the following, where the port
number follows a colon. 123:45:67:89:12345

A little while ago I did a google on a similar topic and one site stated
that a second port was used for the login part of remote desktop. Ive since
lost the item from my history and I can't remember where it was. Perhaps
they were wrong or I may have understood incorrectly, but it might be useful
to do your own search.
