I have a n old computer that I setup with just hard drive for backing up my
info.. I don't keep a monitor hooked up to it. I keep switching it out with
the only one I have. I want to know if I can use remote access to view what
would be up on the screen, so I don't need to keep swapping it out. I mapped
out the hard drive so I can access them from my main computer. Can someone
let me know if I can do this please.

Sure you can do that...Go into the BIOS on the PC and look for an option
along the lines of "When booting not Stop on
error/Stop on all errors/don't stop on error/stop on error with
keyboard/etc"...Configure to not stop on errors...

Then depending on what version of XP your running on that PC you can either
use XP Pro Remote Desktop, if the PC is running XP Pro, or VNC if the PC is
running XP Home. Either of those programs will let you control a headless PC
remotely.

Get either RDP or VNC setup with a monitor first then test without the
monitor. Call using the static LAN IP of the PC.

I'm running Windows XP Home Edition, with router, a firewall. My error
message is "The client not connect to remote computer. Remote connections
might not be enabled or the computer might be too busy to accept new
connections. It is also possible that network problems are preventing your
connection. I need to know do I need to set something on my router & or
firewall. Is there a place I can get step by step info. on how to set this.
Also by setting remote desktop access does that mean access will also be from
the intrenet. Also can it be setup to work lan only.

Well, if the headless PC you want to remotely access/control is running XP
Home then you can *NOT* be use Remote Desktop. Your alternative is UltraVNC
as noted in my original post.

If this is simply over the local LAN then you do not need to forward/open
any ports on the router. If the PC is running the XP SP2 Windows Firewall or
some other software firewall program then UltraVNC needs TCP Port 5900
opened. See this page for help "adding an exception" to the Windows
Firewall.

If you don't open TCP Port 5900 on the router then no one on the public
internet will be able to access the PC.
