Remote Access Connection

I have set up a remote VPN connection from a WinXP client to our server
running Windows Server 2003. The connection is accepted and shows on the
server, but I am unable to browse any of the shared folders on the server
from the remote client. (ie. can not set up a new remote location in My
Network Places). The remote client logon name has been set up with
permission to access these folders on the server.

The server does not use a Domain name, it is just set up as part of a
Workgroup.
The client IP address is allocated by the server from a block of addresses,
but I have no way of checking if the subnet mask is the same as that used on
the server (ie. 255.255.255.0).

Can anyone point me in the right direction ?

It is no thing to do with the same mask, it is some thing to do with the same IP subnet, for example both sides use 192.168.0.x/24. Also to browse over VPN, it is better to setup WINS server. this link may help,

You probably will never get this to work in a workgroup situation.
Browsing across a WAN or a routed network really needs a domain controller
to act as the Domain Master Browser. You could try enabling broadcasts on
the WAN link. This option was added in W2k3.

Thanks. Setting up a WINS server has made a big difference, but I will look
at setting up a domain controller to do the job properly.

Thanks. Setting up a WINS server has enabled me to create a mapped network
drive on the client which seems to work fine for now. I'll look at setting
up a Domain later. The links were a big help.
