Remember password checkbox is missing

I'm not sure if this is a Windows problem or IE problem. Windows, I suspect.

I'm using Windows XP professional. It's been working OK for 6 months or so,
but for some reason it no longer remembers passwords, nor even allows me the
option, when I access a web site which requires authentication. The problem
only occurs on those sites which produce a pop-up dialog box requesting User
Name and password, not on those sites which require a password on the web
page itself.

For example, this site requires a logon via a pop-up dialog box:
http://www.iii.co.uk/portfolio

This dialog box normally has a checkbox along the lines of "Remember this
password". A month or so ago, this checkbox completely disappeared. The
dialog box just has the User Name and Password fields, and the OK and Cancel
buttons. Same problem on all other sites which create this dialog box. Other
PCs I own are OK.

Any ideas?

This fix also applies to Outlook, other programs that store passwords
in the Protected Storage System Provider sub-branch of the Registry.
It also corrects some issues with Internet Explorer and AutoComplete.
