I am attepting to telnet into my IIS 5.0 website on a windows 2000 pro
server, from a remote location, for the purpose of editing some html.
I can logon OK, but I am unable to use the altkey to call "FILE" in
order to save or exit when using the editor (Edit.com). I have tried
remapping the altkey to ctrl+a, as suggested by Microsoft (
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;226107 ), but
it doesn't seem to have made any difference.
The server is W2K Pro. There must be a way to do this.

TIA,
Bill

OP: Alternative to ALT+letter in W2K edit.com for Menus

In W2K's edit.com? One might expect it, but no.

That's what you get for using a full screen editor in a command line. Ctrl + S doesn't work either. I'm surprised it works as well as it does.

However Help tells all. Set the terminal to VTNT for full screen programs.

I tried to find the CUA spec to see if F10 is part of it but I'm f*cked if I can find it. Everyone refers to it but "it" doesn't seem to exist.

I can't thank you enough David. Setting the terminal mode to VTNT does the
trick. I have put many hours into the pursuit of this solution. I am hereby
resolved to making better use of these newsgroups. I now have this group
mapped into my ng client. WooHoo!

Start - Help & Support told me. It says use vtnt to run programs like edit. Plus I can't find the page again (there's 20 million telnet pages in help) but I found another one where you can set the server to accept Ctrl + A as Alt. But I couldn't make edit do Ctrl + S so maybe .......

hmmmm... looks like I switched usernames somewhere along the line. . In any
case, thank-you all. I guess my next step is to investigate the security
issues associated with Telnet. Any suggestions on that?

Thanks again,

ms-its:C:\WINDOWS\Help\telnet.chm::/telnet_client_change_settings.htm
Cut and paste into Start Run

Telnet has the worst organised help I've ever seen.

Help. There is various options. Even though Help is convoluted. It talks about authenication.

But. Your passwords are in plain text on the network so sniffers can find them. If you are using the internet setup a VPN connection over the net. (see help)
