Howard

Wondering if anyone can help me. A while back I got a virus and got rid of it
equaly quickly. I use AVG pro. The computer now runs perfectly.

Windows XP SP2

However it did leave one thing behind. It has done something that prevents
my computer connecting to the various antivirus web sites !!. Fortunatly AVG
uses a different web site for its support and update so is not affected.

However I really would like to be able to put this right so that I can
access these web sites at least for information purposes.

Be most gratefull if anyone out there could tell me how to fix this.

I think the Virus still active and preventing you from accessing AV sites
which will alert you about its existing!.

You need to scan from or use other Offline and online scanner to remove
totally this infection from your machine.
Then uninstall the AVG Pro and then reinstall it, it may be compromised by
the Infection?.
Check your Hosts file for entries for this virus, also the GPO which created
by it to gain access/control and disallowing you from having control or
accessing what you want on your own machine.

Go through these Cleaning steps:
1... First, try to clean up your caches, Internet files and delete cookies
by doing this:
Click Start >> Control Panel >> Double click Network and Internet
Connections >> Double click Internet Options.
On the IE properties windows you will see these Taps:
General | Security | Privacy | Content | Connections | Programs |
Advanced
Under General Tab clear your History, Internet Files and Cookies.
Then click on Advanced tab and scroll down to under the Browsing Option:
[&] Browsing
[ ] Enable Third-Party browser extensions (Req Rest) uncheck this box.
Then click on Programs Tab and click Manage Add-Ons and Disable all non
Verified Add-Ons (You should Renable them later one-by-one and see the
culprit and update it or remove it.

Thanks Nass, The virus was deleted there was only the residual damage.
Following advice I opened and deleted the content of the host file which
contained all the addies that were being blocked, (numbered 01). Seems like
the problem is solved.

Many thanks for your input which has given me many other interesting things
to learn. I will plough through them and maybe be a wiser man :-)
