PC relocation utilities are supposed to make it much more convenient when
getting a new computer, to transfer all the applications, settings, and
documents (or whichever you choose) from one computer to another, so that
one doesn't have to reinstall all the applications from CD, etc. That
certainly could save time. If the program makes mistakes, however, it could
mess things up.

I have seen three such programs in stores, there could be others: "PC
Upgrade Commander" by V-com, "PC Relocator" and "PC Relocator Ultra Control"
by Eisenworld (they also sometimes have the strange name "Alohabob" in the
title, I wonder where that came from?), and I have also seen one boxed with
a Memorex brand name. Any others?

Has anyone reading used one or more of these, and could comment on how well
they work, problems, etc.?

I would not even try them if the Operating systems in use were not
identical. And be mistrustful then. I think you need to do an actual
installation of the programs on new systems; but the support provided
in XP is useful for bringing over other aspects. Read Gary Woodruff's
article on Files and Settings Transfer at

Yes, I once used the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard in XP before.
Doesn't work with a lot of applications, and didn't work too well for me on
those it did work with. And of course, it doesn't transfer the applications
themselves, you still have to install them from CD, it is just supposed to
transfer the settings for the applications, and any files you specify.

These migration programs are supposed to work if transferring to a computer
with the same operating system or later. In my case, it would be between a
computer with Windows XP Home (the older computer) and one with XP
Professional. Basically the same OS, I'm not sure how much difference there
is in Professional. So supposedly, since it is an OS upgrade, it should
work.

But as you say, if it doesn't do it right, it could cause a lot of problems,
messing up the registry, etc. Well, I'm sure any such program has an "Undo"
feature, and there is also "System Restore", but there is a potential for
problems.

Anyone reading actually tried one of these programs?
