Reloading PowerPoint

Mike

I have Windows Me and Office 2000 Professional.
When I set up my PC a few years ago, it was setup with
a default user ("Main", if you will) and then 4 separate
User Profiles (for me, my wife, my daughter and my son).
Most of the software was preloaded, but because Dell
forgot to include a few things (Dell messed up - what a shock!),
they sent them as separate CDs (i.e. Access, FrontPage and
PowerPoint). When I received them, I signed on under my Profile
and loaded them up and they were added on to all four Profiles in
the Start Menu. I then went in to each Profile and created Shortcuts
for everyone's Quick Launch Toolbar and Desktop.

Nobody (except myself) really used them until very recently
when my daughter had to use her PowerPoint for a college assignment
and it wouldn't open from the Start Menu, Quick Launch Toolbar or
the Desktop saying the Application didn't exist. I tried mine from all
three places and they all worked (it opened PowerPoint), so I went into
Explorer and copied the shortcuts and overlaid my daughter's shortcuts
and opened them successfully under her Profile in Explorer. However,
when I signed on as her and tried to open PowerPoint from each of the
three locations, it came up with the same message as above (Appl.
didn't exist).

I have a few questions:
1.) Would I have to reload PowerPoint all over again or is there an
easier way to get hers to work?
2.) If I did (reload again), would I have to Uninstall it first?
3.) If I didn't have to Uninstall it first, would it overlay the PowerPoint
that's there now and if so, would it overlay the P.P. in ALL the Profiles
or just the one under which it was reinstalled?
4.) If I did (reload again), under which Profile would I reload it? (hers/mine/
doesn't matter)?
5.) The version I have on CD is SR-1. If I did have to Uninstall it first (or if
not and it overlaid what exists now), would I lose all the Office Updates
that I've downloaded and installed over the years?
6.) Finally, if I did lose all the Updates, how would I reinstall them (or does
it somehow do it automatically)?

I know there's a bunch of questions, but I'm trying to be as specific as
possible to make them easier to answer. If anyone would like to give this
a shot, I'd really appreciate your help and thank you in advance,

You need to reinstall PPT.
2.) If I did (reload again), would I have to Uninstall it first?

Yes. Uninstall, run the eraser
http://www.rdpslides.com/pptfaq/FAQ00297.htm , then reinstall.
3.) If I didn't have to Uninstall it first, would it overlay the PowerPoint

No, uninstall and reinstall.
4.) If I did (reload again), under which Profile would I reload it? (hers/mine/

I believe you should log on as administrator when you reinstall. That
should make the program(s) available to all the profiles, assuming you
don't lock down parts of the users' profiles. We sometimes see issues
here where someone's designated as a "power user" or something, which
means they don't have rights to all the various program and application
folders. That causes some oddball problems sometimes.
5.) The version I have on CD is SR-1. If I did have to Uninstall it first (or if

Yes, you'll need to reinstall the Updates after you reinstall.
6.) Finally, if I did lose all the Updates, how would I reinstall them (or does
it somehow do it automatically)?

Go to http://office.microsoft.com/officeupdate/default.aspx?CTT=98
Click on Downloads for Office 2000 in the middle section. That will
bring you to
http://office.microsoft.com/officeu...ID=CD010224971033&CTT=4&Origin=ES790020041033

Then click on Office 2000 Updates to get to
http://office.microsoft.com/officeu...ID=CD010225771033&CTT=4&Origin=CD010224971033

Oh, those links aren't wrapping as badly as I thought they would. Use
that last link, Mike. It will take you to the Office 2000 Updates page
so you can download the ones you need.
I know there's a bunch of questions, but I'm trying to be as specific as

a shot, I'd really appreciate your help and thank you in advance,

You might also want to ask this in office.setup, or at least hang on a
little here -- someone can probably confirm the "install as
administrator" I mentioned above.

Thanks very much for your help - I posted it on
the Newsgroup you mentioned (and a few more too!),
so I'll see what kind of response(s) I get...
