Hi, it's necessary for me to reload my OS (Windows XP - Media Center) and
restore applications back to factory defaults. I'm afraid of losing work I
did in MM2. Besides saving my MM2 projects, AVI files and pictures I used in
my movies, whatelse would you recommend me copying/backing up? My
collections file? Are there other files that hold data or settings that I
might need if I want to edit or recreate my movies?

Thank you for your assistance!

Sounds like you have the right idea.

Your MM2 project files have the .mswmm
extension and do not include the source
files. So, if you backup *all* the source
files and your .mswmm project files...you
should have all the files necessary to
continue your editing on the new system.

When you open the .mswmm files on the
new system you will see Red Xs where
the thumbs should be...if you right click the
thumbs, you should be able to browse to
the source files and restore the path.

And it goes without saying that you will
want to save all your completed movie
projects.

your collections file isn't needed to continue work on your projects, just
the project MSWMM and source files.... but if you want it also, see my
Manage Your Files > Collections page.

Thank you to both of you. Your info was very helpful and I truly appreciate
your time.
I have 2 questions for you, PapaJohn. I read your info on Collections
files. I do have a very large collections db. How do I get MovieMaker I ?
Can I still download from MS? Will it interfere w/MM2? Also, I have some
files with the extension .gi . I don't remember what I did that created
those. Do you know what they are?
Thank you !

I haven't run into .gi files... online info says they are Global Image files
made by several disc creation software packages when duplicating discs or
copying disc info to a hard drive.

My Setup MM2 on XP > MM2.0 page has a section about getting MM1... no, it
won't interfere with MM2 as long as you rename the main executable file
which uses the same name... call it something like MM1.exe. It's not
available from Microsoft.

Thank you, again for your expert help!
