I have the same problem as Gill. I tried to reinstall XP
as a pop-up told me I had to. It will not finish
installing but keeps trying so I cannot use my computer.
Dell said it is a M/S problem but I cannot get online
help from Microsoft without a product ID which can only
be gotten by being able to get on the computer. Can
someone tell me how to escape the reinstallation process?

If XP came preintalled on your system, Dell is wrong, it is their problem.
If that is the case, you need to contact Dell support again and don't let
them pass the buck, they know they are responsible for their own
installations.

Thank you for the reply Michael. I bought the XP Upgrade
from Dell, the 8100 came with ME. I thought they would
support the software as a distributor but they sent a
nasty email telling me to go to M/S. I will try again, I
cannot get through to M/S online so as a last resort I
will sit on the phone for a while. Thanks again.

Thank you for explaining the situation. This is their issue as they
provided the software and that is their agreement with Microsoft.

Thanks, I'll try again.
