Howdy!

Just wondering what folks can suggest for RELIABLE DVD-R media.

Google is pulling up dozens of place to BUY media, but I can't hit any
decent sites showing burn comparisons between or reliablily for media.

I just found a bunch of my discs are going bad after only a month AND IT
SUCKS!

: )

Thx!

Fuji DVD-R or DVD+R. Look for Made in Japan on the box. This indicates the
discs are TaiyoYuden.

www.dvdrhelp.com

They have VERY extensive user reviews of just about every media you can find,
its durability, its compatibility with xbox, ps2, standalone dvd players, and
dvd-rom/dvd(+/-)rw drives.

It also includes the identifier written on the disc to ensure you don't get
"rebranded" discs and can try to send them back if you do. You can download a
program to check the identifier from the site.

Hrm.. I've been here before.

No FORTIS listed and they say that Princo has GOOD reliability??? I dunno if
I trust this site.

Thanks!

I just picked up a 50 spindle of KODAK DVD-R and they are the exact same
manufacturer as the crappy FORTIS I just tossed into the
trash!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Manufacturer code: VDSPMSAB 01... and everything else Alcohol tells me about
the discs are identical!!!!

What part of the words "Fuji" and "TaiyoYuden" did you fail to understand ?

For $3+ per disc I'll just invest in hard drives...

and I don't know what a Taiyo Yuden is.

The disc packaging should say "made in Japan" on it.

i hate optical storage too, usually keep a few spare HDDs around
(offline, unplugged) for storage.

Dumb thing is that I didn't see any great reviews about Maxell, but the
10pack I picked up today were made in Japan and are TYG01... I assume that
they are rebranded Taiyo Yuden? Not a bad deal at $15 I guess.

Also got a 50 spindle of BenQ that ended up being SONY04D1. $25 for that
spindle.

I hate relying on optical media, but I had MUCH bad experience with tape
many years ago. I imagine it's a lot more reliable now, but still pricey for
the functionality.

Leaving HDD's sitting around on the shelf seems to be a bit of a waste and
risky.. but I've got IDE drives that have been bouncing around the workshop
for a long time and still work fine.

If I knew what I was getting BEFORE I brought the damn things home I'd be
more inclined to pay the higher price. The Kodak were double the price of
the Fortis and ended up being the same damn discs!!!

I also recommend Fuji and Taiyo Yuden.
Here is an excellent online retailer:
http://www.cdroutlet.com/

A couple of tips...
1) Don't buy media that is on sale or has a rebate, I always have problems
with that stuff (there is a reason it's on sale)
2) Check the manufacturer's website. My NEC2500 has a list of recommended
brands and they are not the same for -R and +R. I do get better results
using the recommended brands.

The other thing you can do is buy them at a place like Staples/Business Depot,
which has a 14 day no questions asked return policy, so you can pretty much keep
trying them until you find ones that work well.

With the Search option I pulled up FORTIS.

This site is just what I need. Thanks!

Never had a problem with Ritek...Actually...I'm using Princo now and they
are quite inexpensive. No problems.

How often do you try and use those disks a few months later?

THAT'S when I got bit in the ass.

Well...I've been burning for over a year. I keep them in a pocket binder and
they all work fine. Sometimes I wonder if they scratch easier than others
but I don't have much to compare on. The kids DVD backup's go fast but I
think that's just abuse. For the price, I just bust out the original and
burn a new one. They work with all the players too...2 different Apex,
Toshiba, a portable US Logic and the PS2.
