Hi Niels,
I have recently formatted my harddisk.
I'm not so sure that you did, please read on as to why.
When I reinstalled Windows XP, it
automatically made two drives (c (very small) and D). Now, how do I change
that so I only have one drive?
Without starting over, you can't. The drive tools in Windows do not allow
for resizing "one the fly" or non-destructively. You would need a third
party program to do this without destroying what is currently on the drive.
Partitioning programs:
BootIT NG
www.terabyteunlimited.com
Partition Magic
www.powerquest.com/partitionmagic
Partition Commander

Ranish Partition Manager

When reinstalling, XP also made two Windows directories (Windows mand
Windows0). How do I change that, so I only have one Windows directory?
This is why I do not think you formatted. When you reinstalled, WinXP saw
the existing installation. Since you indicated that you wanted to create a
new installation, it created a new "Windows" folder, that being Windows(0).
All you really need to do at this point is to delete the obsolete one. Make
sure that if you copied any pertinent data to that folder in the old system,
that you transfer it to the new one. You may also find residue of your old
profiles under "C:\Documents and Settings".
When I start various programs, my diskdrive A (the diskette-drive) growls
like an animal. What cvan be the problem?
Probably one of two things:
1) A setting in your antivirus software, check it to see if it is scanning
A:\ when programs are loaded.
2) An errant MRU (Most Recently Used) entry in the system registry.
Start/run regedit, click edit/find, look for "A:\". If it turns up as a
string value in any MRU key, just simply delete it.
Hope this helps,
