Reinstalling

A couple of years ago I upgraded my laptop from ME to 2000 Pro. I have since learned that this is not a "supported upgrade path." Anyway, I need to reformat my hard drive and start over, but I have been told that I might need my former OS disk (the ME disk) during an attempt to reinstall my upgrade version of W2k pro

Is this true? I cannot find my ME disk (I probably burned it), but I do have a Windows 98 disk. Can I safely reformat and reinstall W2k? If so, what steps should I follow?

If you still have the Windows 98 CD, you can use it as the qualifying
product. My recommendation would be to NOT install Windows 98, but rather
install Windows 2000 directly. You should be prompted for a qualifying
product. Insert the Windows 98 CD, and then once the disk is detected, you
should be prompted to reinsert the Windows 2000 CD and the installation will
continue.
