Reinstalling XP

After upgrading from 98 to XP, my hard drive died. I have a new disk and I would like to know two things:

1- Since I have an upgrade version, do I have to install 98 first and upgrade it to XP, or can I just install XP on the new drive?

2- Will I have to activate XP again (and might this cause a problem)? I only change drives, the motherboard and CPU are the same.

Thanks for any help with this.

1 - You should be able to install the upgrade, at some point it may ask you
for the previous version disk, once recognised it then ask you to re-insert
the XP disk.

2 - You can activate XP as many times as you want, the only restriction is
that once activated over the internet you have to wait 30 days (I think)
before you can re-activate via the internet, but you will be able to
re-activate as often as you want via the phone (the freephone number is
displayed on the screen), in the past I have used this method three times in
one evening.

Wrong. There is no limit to the number of times you can activate XP on the same machine and no time limit to do so. I have reinstalled XP and activated it 4 times in one day when testing various setups. If you want to save the trouble just go into the the windows\system32 folder and then copy the wpa.dbl to a floppy and after reinstalling XP you won't have to activate over the internet just put this file off the floppy back into the windows\system32 folder. Good luck.
