for reasons too long to go into I am going to reinstall XP
Home on my computer. I have 2 hard drives. If i renstall
to the C drive will the data/programs on the C drive be
lost while everything on the D drive be preserved? (this
is the result I am looking for).

yep done done that twice now :( used d: for all the backups etc so they
should be safe be wary tho my mate formated his d: drive first lol

You can install it that way, yes. However, if you have any programs on your
D drive (not just data), then you'll need to reinstall them in order to get
them to work. By perfoming a clean install on you C drive, you'll have a
clean Registry with no references to those programs, if any, on your D
drive. The folders will be there, the files will be there, you'll be able
to access them, but programs probably won't run (unless they don't require
installing).
