If this eraser programs runs from within Windows then it can't possibly
erase everything, thus leaving a lot of the old Windows install behind. If
you want a clean install best to reformat the drive and then install.

The first question I ask is why did you feel the need to erase the drive and
start over? If you were having a lot of difficulty with frequent lockups or
reboots of your system and thought is was related to Windows it is possible
that it was actually hardware related. That would explain the problem you
are seeing now. Faulty RAM, motherboard problems, hard drive or powersupply
issues can all cause the problem you are seeing.

However if you know your hardware is good then perhaps the 'eraser program'
did a low level format and you will need to create a partition in order to
continue the install.

Boot off the XP CD. When you get to the first screen that asks what you wish
to do select the option to Repair using the Recovery Console press 'r'. The
Recovery Console gives you a set of tools which might be helpful. When you
get to the command prompt type the following and press the Enter Key

DISKPART

you should see an option to Delete partitions. Use this option to delete any
partitions found on the drive you are wishing to reinstall on and then use
Diskpart to create a new partition. When finished type the following at the
command prompt to reboot:

EXIT

When the computer restarts and depending that the XP CD is still in the
drive you should be able to start your installation.

When you erase everything by booting from a CD or floppy you should have a
clean hard drive with nothing on. What happens when you reset the computer
after it locks up, does the XP install pick up and try and recover? Are they
USB keyboard and mouse or PS2? Try different keyboard and mouse.

Try with just the keyboard. Have you got a USB to PS2 adapter? If the
keyboard is USB you can then plug it into the PS2 socket. Some keyboards
have both USB and PS2 sockets, plug them both in at the same time (with the
computer turned off, never plug PS2 in with the computer running).
