Reinstalling xp over existing one, please help

i have a problem with something in my registry & i was told reloading my OC
wil fix, I have one other small question. I think you can but I want to ask &
make sure, can I reinstall the OS(xp) over my existing one & fix the registry
by doing that? That way I don't have to reinstall all my programs I have on
here, right?

Any help would be greatly appreciated

What about system restore?

A Repair or In-Place upgrade won't heal Registry error(s). What type
of errors do you have and who told you a repair install would fix it ?
If you do a repair install, XP might re-create any Registry keys that
are missing or might reset some key values. However, it isn't going to
remove or purge any keys since a repair install preserves settings and
programs.

a system restore wont fix this prob,
started a week ago, when i turn on my computer it hangs on the asus screen
for a minute then says "boot failure, insert disk". When I then turn my
computer off & then back on, it loads without a problem. this happens
everytime the computer has been off for a few hrs

Yes, always try system restore first - MUCH easier and quicker.

That message usually indicates the machine boot sequence has
detected or attempted to boot from a disk/partition that doesn't
contain a valid Operating System. You'll see this message if you
inadvertently leave a Floppy disk in the drive (Not bootable).
In your case it could be that your disk drive is not spinning up in
a quick enough time frame for the PC to boot from it. After you
first try it with power applied the drive will reach it's normal
speed and be available for booting. Your BIOS may have an
option called IDE Delay which allows the drive time to spin up
before allowing the boot sequence to proceed.

That's not a Windows problem at all. If the computer can't find the drive to
access it, it's certainly not at the point that it's reading the registry.
So no, a repair install isn't going to do anything for you.

You've got some sort of a hardware problem, perhaps and impending failure.
Unless you've been messing around with hardware or bios settings, this
shouldn't just happen suddenly.

Well it's hard to see how a registry problem can be causing a HD failure
before you've even loaded XP. Backup everything a quickly as possible, and
get your machine fixed.
