Hi Everyone,

I want to uninstall my XP professional on my old laptop and reinstall it on
my new laptop. When I do this, will I have any problems reactivating my
installation? Is there a process I have to go thru ahead of time to avoid any
licensing conflicts?

Thx!

Try it, the old EULA's allow'd one to install an os to a laptop -
while another copy ran on a desktop. If asked that's your story :)

The old EULA's never allowed more than one installation per
computer for licensed Microsoft operating systems. That is,
it was this way with MS-DOS and the same all the way through
to Windows XP.

Depends if its an OEM version, ie supplied with the sys or retail version.
If a retail version simply install on the new sys and put the old sys away,
if OEM sys its tied to the sys it was supplied with

False, Andrew! Windows XP, like every other version of Windows, can be moved
to another computer, *if* it is a retail version..

True, he may very well have an OEM version, and if he does, the EULA doesn't
permit him to move it to another computer, or it may be BIOS-locked to the
computer and unmovable. But that's a very different statement from
"Actually thats specifically what you cant do with xp. The registration wont
work since xp has been registered to the 1st computer."

Why do you persist in giving people erroneous information? Do you delight in
trying to screwi up people's lives?

Nope, that was never true of any version of Microsoft Windows. It is,
however, true of some versions of Microsoft Office.

That depends entirely on whether you have a trnasferable retail license
or a non-transferable OEM license.

licensing conflicts?

No.

Assuming a retail license (OEM licenses are not legitimately
transferable), simply remove WinXP from the computer it is currently on
and then install it on the new computer. If it's been more than 120
days since you last activated that specific Product Key, the you'll most
likely be able to activate via the Internet without problem. If it's
been less, you might have to make a 5 minute phone call.

Here are the facts pertaining to activation:

No, that's completely false. Some Microsoft _application_ EULAs permit
the licensed owner to install the product upon one desktop and one
portable computer simultaneously, but this has *never* been true of
*any* of Microsoft's operating systems' licenses.

My bad, must of been Word, or similar

You are thinking of some Microsoft Office EULAs - currently the "and on the
laptop too" concept is not applicable to retail and OEM copies of Windows.

Thank you, everyone, for your input. I do know it is allowed on only one
system because I called MS a couple of years to ago to ask them. I bought the
XP upgrade from the campus bookstore as a student and I wanted it on my DTop
as well as my school LTop but they didn't allow both installs. I'm going to
go ahead and try the uninstall/reinstall and just hope there are no problems.

Thx again!

PS. BTW, I bought a copy of MS Office from the bookstore as well and do know
that you can have it on one dtop and one ltop at once.
