Reinstalling Windows XP

I'm trying to reinstall xp but I get messages that windows can't copy certain
files. When I try again I get the same problem but usually on different
files. Any suggestions? Prior to trying to reinstall my system kept
stopping with different serious error messages. Sometimes could not get it
back on.

Go to the website of your hard drive manufacturer and get their hard
drive diagnostics.

Also verify the CD is free of any defects.
Try a different CD/DVD drive.

Problems copying files or corrupted files during installation are
most often caused by defective, incompatible, or sub-standard hardware;
in order of likelihood, either RAM, the hard drive, or the motherboard.
On very rare occasions the CD drive or installation CD is the problem.

Start with testing the RAM. You might try MemTest86:
http://www.memtest86.com/ It's free. Then you can download and use the
hard drive maufacturer's diagnostic utility to test the hard drive. If
both RAM and hard drive test out clean, check with the motherboard
manufacturer for any diagnostic utilities.

I'm having the same (I would have used the same wording) problems. Did the
replies help you? If not, what did you do to get a successful reinstallation
 
Did you try System Restore?

Consider doing "repair" - Boot from XP CD - bypass Recovery Console repair
option - screen regarding current XP installation will offer option to
"repair" current installation or "clean Install" - select repair option -
setup will continue with an upgrade installation,
