Hello. Currently, my computer has Windows XP
Professional which a comp repair company put on my
computer and for which I do not have the install CD. I
was unsatisfied with the repair job so I do not want to
go back. I had a corrupt file which I fixed according to
one of the articles in the Knowledge Base, but now alot
of programs are not working properly, such as Outlook
Express not switching identities, comp not recognizing
loaded CD-ROMs, among others. I just want to go back to
Windows XP and start all over.

When I try to boot off the Windows XP installation CD and
go through the process of installing it, it tries to
install XP without overwriting or deleting XP
Professional. How do I go about getting rid of all
traces of XP Professional so I can cleanly install XP as
the sole operating system? If I reinstall XP, will I be
losing everything that's stored on the computer right
now? Thank you for your help.

Greetings --

Simply boot from the WinXP installation CD. You'll be offered
the opportunity to delete, create, and format partitions as part of
the installation process. (You may need to re-arrange the order of
boot devices in the PC's BIOS to boot from the CD.)

I'm a little confused. Do you mean that they installed Pro for which you
don't have the CD, but you do have the Home CD? If that's not it, what
install CD are you missing?

If my first guess was correct, to do a clean install of Home, you'll have to
format the drive, which will delete everything on the drive.
