I am trying to reformat a compaq presario v5000 laptop. While copying
installation files, it skips several files saying it can not copy them. I
figured it was the cd, so I borrowed a friends compaq recovery cd and the
same thing happened. The hard drive has been reformatted so I do not have an
operating system. Does anyone have any idea how to resolve this problem or
what is causing it? Thanks in advance for your time!

That issue is also caused by bad RAM, a bad hard drive, and a bad CD drive
(among other things). Download and run memtest to test the RAM, download the
hard drive mfg's diagnostic tool to test the hard drive, if both pass you
likely have a problem with your CD drive.

I have seen this a couple of times, and managed to fix it by disabling
Legacy USB support in the BIOS.

This can also indicate that the CD / DVD drive is failing because the
unit is having trouble "reading" the disk.

Didn't I say that?

It obviously is or the OP wouldn't be having trouble copying files during
the installation AFTER booting from the CD.
