Reinstalling Windows ME

Hello,

I could not find a newsgroup for Windows ME so I hope someone can help me.
I need to reinstall the operating system and need to know how to format my
hard drive. Obviously, I am not a sophisticated user, but I have reinstalled
ME before but can't remember how I formatted the hard drive. Any help is
much appreciated.

Hi - for future reference, the Windows ME groups are
microsoft.public.windowsme.* - try microsoft.public.windowsme.general.

That said, boot from your WinME CD and you should be able to do whatever you
wish -
 
Try booting from your install media or ask them here.

That winme group is pretty dead - and most people feel that winme is dead too. But...
if you want to invest your time reinstalling it you might ask on the win98 groups.
It is much more related to win98 than it is to win2k or winxp; and many winme users
find their answers there.
 
Nope, W98 is not the same thing in many respects. Try here instead:

Although ME and W9x are very much alike there is too much difference
between the two for a novice user to rely on W98 information, the
biggest difference being that ME has done away with DOS. You will get
excellent answers and help on the windowsme.general group, there are a
couple of MVPs and other regulars that answer questions daily and they
know ME inside out. Just don't tell them that you intend to use Norton
products or they'll berate you! As for the question of formating the
drive just get a W98 boot disk from bootdisk.com and format the drive in
a DOS session.

Nope....it's still DOS. Only WinNT-based OSes like WinNT (duh), W2k, Winxp,
W2003 are not based on DOS. One of the main differences between ME and 9x
is that it does also system restore - but it's still Win9x, and it's
actually far less stable than Win98 SE in the eyes of many.

Not so. One of the main difference between Windows 98 and Windows ME is
in its 32 bit driver model. Windows ME does not load or use 16 bit
drivers. Windows ME does not use an autoexec file EXCEPT when shuting
down. As for PC Health and System Restore none of that was available
in W98 nor was it available in Windows 2000. Windows XP is now the
proud owner of what was tested on WinME 32 bit.

As for being less stable than Windows 98 that is an absolute falsehood.
Without 16 bit drivers it loads way faster and once loaded it is
absolutely way more stable than Windows 98. But PC Health and System
Restore are an absolute bog on Windows. Nonetheless a well tweaked ME
system is superior to a Windows 98 system providing that you have
adequate hardware and software to run it.

WinME is still based on DOS. Win95 was 32-bit, too.

Only in terms of the user interface (which I immediately restore to "windows
classic" on corporate workstations anyway). WinXP is based on Windows NT's
kernel - ME is not. ME is still based on DOS.

Your mileage may vary, but I have run into far more problems supporting ME
machines than Win98 SE ones.
That said, I don't really want to touch either one - I think XP is the best
desktop OS MS has come out with yet.
