my machine has started acting unreliably, with such symptoms as ie generating
run time errors such as
program:c:\program files\internet explorer\iexplore.exe
this aplication has requested the runtime to terminate it in an unusual
way,
please contact the application's support team for more information)

and, when trying to open a program (like ie)
can't load library from memory

and also, after installing mcafee virus scan, being unable to open the
windows control panel from the start, settings menu

i decided to try reinstalling windows from the cd, but that failed because
the cd is sp3, but i've already updated to sp4 using windows update, so i got
an error that going from sp4 to sp3 was not possible

how can i get windows to fix itstelf, or otherwise get back a stable system?

Thanks, but what do I do now?

I'd test the memory and disk using the manufactuerr's tools then start a
clean installation. The problems you described are not likely to be fixed by
a repair installation even if you had the media.

http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp
http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/support/downloads/?vgnextrefresh=1
http://wdc.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/wdc...2VhcmNoX2ZubCZwX3BhZ2U9MQ**&p_li=&p_topview=1

To do a clean install, either boot the Windows 2000 install CD-Rom or setup
disks. The set of four install disks can be created from your Windows 2000
CD-Rom; change to the \bootdisk directory on the CD-Rom and execute
makeboot.exe (from dos) or makebt32.exe (from 32 bit) and follow the
prompts.

(Note: If your drive controller is not natively supported then you'll want
to boot the Windows 2000 install CD-Rom. Then *F6* very early and very
important (at setup is inspecting your system) in the setup to prevent drive
controller detection, and select S to specify additional drivers. Then later
you'll be prompted to insert the manufacturer supplied Windows 2000 driver
for your drive controller in drive "A")

Setup inspects your computer's hardware configuration and then begins to
install the Setup and driver files. When the Windows 2000 Professional
screen appears, press ENTER to set up Windows 2000 Professional.

Read the license agreement, and then press the F8 key to accept the terms of
the license agreement and continue the installation.

When the Windows 2000 Professional Setup screen appears, all the existing
partitions and the unpartitioned spaces are listed for each physical hard
disk. Use the ARROW keys to select the partitions Press D to delete an
existing partition, If you press D to delete an existing partition, you must
then press L (or press ENTER, and then press L if it is the System
partition) to confirm that you want to delete the partition. Repeat this
step for each of the existing partitions When all the partitions are deleted
press F3 to exit setup, (to avoid unexpected drive letter assignments with
your new install) then restart the pc then when you get to this point in
setup again select the unpartitioned space, and then press C to create a new
partition and specify the size (if required). Windows will by default use
all available space.

Be sure to apply SP4 and these two below to your new install before
connecting to any network. Internet included. (sasser, msblast)

Do you have reason to think it is a virus, or have you installed
anything recently? Please consider that your machine and/or hard disk
may be failing, in which case a reinstall would provide only temporary
relief. I suggest that you make sure that you have good backups of your
important data.

Cheers,

Cliff

Okay, memory and disk check out with no problems - so I guess you're
recommending a clean install - I've got a Thinkpad T21 with CD (no floppy) -
can you point me to where to find instructions re how to clean install in
this situation?

Thanks, but what do I do now?

Okay, I've reloaded Windows and the system is still unstable.

After the reload, I was getting lots of "can't reload library from memory"
errors, found a note via google of others having the same problem, so I
followed the fix advice (renamed winnt/system32/ipv6monl.dll) and the
problems went away.

however, my pcmcia wifi card kept shutting off without error message - it
just took down the link. the pcmcia task in the systray would say that it was
there, the hardware tab of my computer properties said it was working, but
the wifi software said no hardware present. When I would remove and then plug
in the card again, it would work again for a while, then stop again.

I'm wondering if there is anything else to try, or if I have to move on to a
clean load (reformat). Please advise, and if clean load in the next step,
please point me to some good instructions for that - last time I tried it
(different system) I couldn't get the IBM drivers installed (PCI card,
ethernet driver, etc)

thanks, John

Here's the steps again. You can download drivers ahead of time from the
manufacturer's web site.

Setup inspects your computer's hardware configuration and then begins to
install the Setup and driver files. When the Windows 2000 Professional
screen appears, press ENTER to set up Windows 2000 Professional.

Read the license agreement, and then press the F8 key to accept the terms of
