Reinstalling Ports

On a relatively new Compaq Notebook, I tried using the dialup modem for the
first time (my normal internet connection is via DSL). After failing to
connect, I discovered that the Device Manager is missing the "Ports (Com and
LPT1:) item. I presume that that is what prevents the modem from seeing the
phone line.

How can I reinstall the Ports? I believe the Compaq contains a backup of
the entire original system, but after wasting several hours on the phone
with someone on the Indian subcontinent, who tried this and that, without
noticing the missing ports, I'd like to do this myself.

Hi,

Does your laptop have a dial up modem that comes with a telephone jack. If
it has then you will have to install the drivers for the modem so that it can
use the telephone and connect to the internet. If there are no drivers
installed for the modem then you cannot use it.

You may also need to check to see if your BIOS has these ports enabled.

Check by running:

msinfo32 from Start|Run and look under Hardware Resources | IRQs
See if you have any IRQs being used for COM1 and/or COM2.

If not, then they have been disabled in the BIOS settings.

Winmodems ARE NOT associated with actual COM ports like the old hardware
modems, you SHOULD NOT see the port that the modem tells you it is installed
on listed under the Ports section.
What is the exact problem your having?

What happens if in the BIOS, you have disable ALL COM ports? Until I
enabled ComA and ComB (or Com1 and Com2), I could not get my dial-up modem
to work for Com3.

Then you have something strange going on. You do not even need physical com
ports on a PC for a winmodem to work.
