Reinstalling IE/OE

Having rediculous problems with IE/OE in XP Pro SP2. I need to dump both and
reinstall but downloading stops when it determines that I am using the same
version it is trying to install. This should be easy to do but I assume this
problem is because IE is imbedded in XP. Is there anything I can do here or
should I just move to Linux?

Chances are it is related to spyware and quite often attempts to fix things
by reinstalling makes matters worse, or at least more confusing since it
tends to hide the original problem.

You can always install FireFox and Thunderbird to give you time to sort the
problem out if you wish, but first look here and see if anything looks or
sounds familiar.

http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm

Also, please mention what Antivirus, Security, Pop-up and Firewall software
you run if any.

Unfortunately things that "Should be easy" in Linux are not usually that
easy either so time-wise it is probably more efficient to try and repair the
XP install you already have.

I have a big aluminum softball bat that I'm about to use on this laptop.
Microsoft Update will not allow me to try to download sp2 again to reinstall.
When I bypass MS Update and find a downloadable sp2 it is for developers and
is useless for me. Frustration level is VERY high - seems like EVERY option
is closed to me. IS there anyone at Microsoft who has any idea how to fix
this or is it some kind of deliberate "attack" by Microsoft. I have been on
Microsoft communities for a week now and no one has been able to help. I
just want to getr rid of IE/OE so I can re-install it. This should be simple
and if it's not then someone at MS needs to invest some of those trillions of
dollars profit into fixing this. I'm forced by MS to have IE whether its
working or not!!! Thos is ridiculous.

Does anyone know if Apple OS can be installed on a PC - it's enough to make
me want to go back to Macs.

"...should I just move to Linux?"

Haha. Yeah, go ahead and give that a try. Check your local Wal-Mart for
interesting Linux software titles that you will bring you hours of
enjoyment. Better yet, figure out how to install a single application that
you get for "free" online.

Dude, boot from your Windows XP CD and perform a clean install.

XP

Make sure your anti-virus is turned off.
The section
Windows XP and Windows XP SP1: Edit the registry and install Internet
Explorer 6
works on earlier versions of Windows.
If you added WinXP SP2 you will have to uninstall that first.

I tried to unstall sp2 using add/remove programs and got a warning window
saying "An error occurred when trying to remove WindowsXP Service Pack 2.
It may have already been uninstalled." When I checked the system information
in Control Panel is says Win XP Pro Service Pack 2 is installed. Where
should I go from here?

I don't know what has happened to make Windows thing SP2 might have been
uninstalled and therefor no idea how to fix that. Perhaps the first step is
to attack the problems.

First eliminate any spyware.

CAUTION!!!!! Removing some spyware can damage the Winsock stact. Before
you try to remove spyware using any of these programs , download a copy of

versions) so that the program will be available after removing the spyware.

Note that AdAware and SpyBot S & D will each catch some things the other
won't. Also, each needs to be updated with the program's update function
before every use, even when just downloaded. There's also a lot more to do
than just those two programs. CWShredder is also available here:

Thanks for all your help Frank. I downloaded adaware, and the TrendMicro
spyware hunter and used both, found a number of things and then dumped
everything. What next?

Robear, for Gods sake can someone help me here - I'm almost frustrated to
tears!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is not about spyware. I adawared, spycheked,
loaded and downloaded untill I'm almost bleeding at the finger tips.

Please read my posts in this thread and try to tell me what the hell is
going on here. I did everything suggested. I've even reinstalled XP which
brought back IE in the ADD/Remove program list and installed IE SP1. While
reinstalling XP I got a warning saying that msoe.dll was missing or
corrupted. I continued installation anyhow. When I tried to searsh MS.com
for that file all I got was instructions on how to extract it off the disk -
a file that is corrupted anyhow!!!

The computer is no longer showing that XP sp2 is installed but IE locks up
and I have to crtl/alt/del to get out of it. microsoft Updates refuses to
let me download using FireFox and keeps telling me I need IE 6 which I have
but is locking up.

Dear god it's like a BAD Jim Carrey movie DUMBER AND DUMBEST (are there any
other kind)!!! I'm ready to throw the whole thing in the junkpile because
that's all this cr** is!

AllI bloody wanted to do was use OE to check my bloody e-mail.

IS there no way to just dump OE and IE to reinstall - I don't think worrying
about sypware has been productive.

PLEASE HELP ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Everytime I take another turn i don't hit
a wall - the wall throws itself at me nd comes crashing down on me!

If you performed a clean install and there are files 'missing or corrupt',
then your hard disk itself may be on the brink of going bye-bye. Data
corruption on an NTFS drive is not a good sign.

Try going to folder options and check show hidden files. Then go to the
windows folder..then to the inf folder and find ie.inf. Right click and pick
install. You may have to point it to different folders for a file.
