Reinstalling Critical Updates

After experiencing some computer problems I overwrote my entire
Windows folder with a copy backed up earlier using NTBackup. I
instructed it to overwrite all files.

During the period between the backup and now, I have installed several
critical updates. Obviously I must have overwritten some files with
older versions (updated by "Critical Updates"). However, when I scan
my computer for critical updates, it doesn't find anything.

Am I up to date? If not, how to I get these overwritten files back?

I am using XP Home Edition.

Thanks,
Bob

Bob, if you reinstalled WinXP doing a repair install then you would
definitely have to replace the Win Updates. With doing
a backup I'm not to sure if the winupdates are overwritten. Look in your
C:\Windows folder for $NT Uninstall Folders. If
they are there then you winupdates may be intact. Maybe, one of the MSVP's
will weigh in on this.

If you rename the folder \windows\system32\catroot2 to something like
catroot2old, then run windows update, it'll recreate the catroot2 folder
and it should redetect what updates you need. After you've done that you
can delete the old folder.

Thanks all.

$NT Uninstall folders were in place and a casual review of the
contents indicated that versions of files stored in these folders were
indeed older than what Windows is currently using.

QFEcheck does however confirm that all hot fixes are current.

Ragards,
Bob
