Hi

I bought a compaq laptop with XP Home originally installed on it. The
salesman assured me XP Home would run IIS, which is what I wanted it
for... don't ask! Having taken it back to them, they gave me an
upgrade CD to XP Pro.

The laptop is now about 2 years old, and starting to creak a bit. I'm
considering formatting / reinstalling to try get it back to some of
it's former glory...

What I'd like to know is, how do I go about reinstalling XP? I didnt
get an XP Home CD, only a backup/recovery disk, and then obviously the
XP Pro upgrade. If I can't do this I'll be livid - I've read that you
need original disks of a windows version that is upgradeable, ie. XP
Home, which didnt come with the laptop in the first place... So am I
now stuck between a rock & a hard place with this MS OS?? Or is there
a way that I can do this - ie. get a 'clean' installation of WinXP
Pro?

Thanks
Sean

You could wipe the hard drive clean and use your restore disk to put home
back on and then upgrade or you could cheat a little and borrow someone's 98
cd and do a clean install of XP Pro.

Hi Sean, you can do like br549 suggested, use the recovery disk to
format and install Windows XP home in your computer, and then upgrade
from there to Windows XP Pro. When upgrading:

Uninstall any third-party antivirus or firewall programs.

Disconnect all peripheral hardware devices, but not the monitor,
keyboard or mouse.

While at your XP Home desktop screen, insert the XP Pro CD in the CD
drive.

Select the default "Upgrade" option....do not select "New
Installation".

Defrag your drive after upgrading.

Reinstall your antivirus program & turn-on the firewall.

Visit the Windows Update website and download the necessary updates.

Perform a Disk Cleanup & Defrag your drive again.

Hope this helps.
