I had an incidence where my ntoskrnl.exe was corrupted and
Microsoft support advised me to reinstall the operating
system. Upon doing so all my other programs were no longer
seen by the OS, i.e. no longer under my Start/Programs,
nor on my desktop. All the programs are still there on the
c: drive. Do I have to reinstall all my software or do I
have to painstakingly remap them all into Windows one by
one?

Oh yes. If you do a reinstallation that is not a 'repair' install, you will
have to reinstall all your software (and driver software such as for mice,
keyboards, printers, etc.....). The new installation of Windows does not see
it because the Windows registry was recreated during installation. The
software has to be reinstalled to re-register its dll files and references
in the registry. Any updates to Windows or software will have to be
reinstalled also.

Thanks Rich. I just wound up formatting the drive and
starting from scratch. This was my first, and a major, XP
problem.
